Quit Your Job

Recently I did something terrifying, yet exhilarating: I quit my job.
The decision to leave did not come easily, but it did come naturally.

I currently work for an incredible company with even more incredible people surrounding me, yet my time has come. Over the past year I have created a nest of safety complete with health care, a steady paycheck, and a stagnant routine. Days have blurred into weeks and then months as my Monday through Friday routine lulled me into a sense of security and responsibility. A shocking realization came as I hit my one year mark with nothing more to show for it than a desperate looking 401K. An entire year of my life was gone just like that. All of the missed opportunities weighed on my shoulders and I realized that life is about so much more than a desk job.

"Your hands are not made to type out memos. Or put paper through fax machines. Or hold a phone up while you talk to people you dislike. 100 years from now your hands will rot like dust in your grave. You have to make wonderful use of those hands now. Kiss your hands so they can make magic." - James Altucher

Quitting is not an easy thing and I know it is not an option for everyone. Stepping outside of your comfort zone can lead to failure. What most people don't usually tell you is that it can lead to greater success than you ever imagined. Perhaps the next step you take will be the one to throw you down the pathway to your dreams. If you risk nothing, you risk everything.

Too many people are out there working jobs they hate, to buy things they don't need, to impress people they don't like. Life is far too short to be spent working at a job that does not fulfill you on a daily basis. What does not satisfy you will ultimately drain you. We live in a society that seems to value money and power over personal joy. For me, too many days have been spent dreaming of far away places. Some of us were not made to sit a computer, staring wistfully out the window as our youth passes us by.

It is time for us to take control of our lives. We are responsible for our own happiness. The excuse that "I will have a life when I retire" is not good enough. Don't wait to live the life you want. Take it now.
